Gwen Bergstrom

The brains behind the pumpkin patch, Gwen, is the youngest daughter of Harold and Marilyn Luebke. She grew up on a farm northeast of St. Libory, Nebraska in  watermelon country. Her family raised corn, beans, holstein and hogs. Her first job outside of babysitting and working on the family farm was hoeing watermelons and pumpkins with her 3 older sisters for Rose Mary Helgoth. 

Gwen babysat for the 3 oldest daughters of Gene and Sheila Horak of The Scarecrow Patch before their pumpkin patch was opened.  
Having 2 wonderful pumpkin patches within miles of her home when her kids were young, The Scarecrow Patch and Helgoth’s Pumpkin Patch, Gwen developed a love of pumpkin patches and all things farm and fall: the smell of fall and campfires, hayrides, kids running and laughing with glee, s’mores, hot chocolate, people not staring at screens …. the list goes on and on. 

When the family moved to North Platte in 2015, she fell in love with the people and community. With her love of people and pumpkin patches, she felt the community needed a place in the country for family fun. After much convincing and planning, Homestead Pumpkin Patch was built! She loves that her kids are getting to experience hard work and getting their hands dirty.

​Gwen is co-owner of Homestead Pumpkin Patch and the person with ideas. She inherited her creativity from her mother. She has more ideas than her husband, Kevin, can handle. Every time she says “I have an idea” his response is “oh geez”. 
Gwen also works for Educational Service Unit 16 and provides counseling for kids in 5 of the 16 schools in the ESU 16 service area.

Kevin, the “muscle” behind the pumpkin patch, also grew up on a farm in central Nebraska with his parents and 2 brothers. When we moved to North Platte Nebraska in 2015, one of the first things Gwen commented on was there were not any farm pumpkin patches. Her husband, Kevin, made the comment that “if you find the right property we can build a pumpkin patch”. Well, talk about your all time backfires.

With much concern and reservation Kevin agreed to support his wife and jump in with Gwen’s dream. Kevin later learned that “supporting” his wife’s dream meant digging a lot of holes, building things, moving things, learning about many things, making mistakes, along with many other things.

​We have two great kids that are troopers, to say the least. Both have been amazing with their ability to help with so many projects. In addition to that their willingness to make sacrifices from doing some other fun things to instead spend the day building in the hot sun.

Brandi Sponie

It all started one Halloween when a little girl needed a friend to go Trick-or-Treating with, the rest is history!
Brandi  was suckered into the pumpkin patch with dreams of becoming the Kitchen Manager. 
Serving nachos and making hot chocolate is her happy place, but she draws the line at sticking her hand down the toilet to remove a cob of corn.
